Let’s talk about accountability (and why it’s essential for content marketing success)

You’ve decided to outsource your content marketing or delegate it to one of your team members. Problem solved, nothing more to do, right? Wrong.

I hate to be the one to give you some straight talk, but content marketing takes more than one person to make it successful.

So why is accountability so important? Every content marketing activity - whether outsourced or delegated - requires effort from both parties. Without it, you can find that:

  • the direction isn’t quite right

  • decisions are being made that don’t reflect your brand

  • action can stall (or stop completely)

  • it becomes a one dimensional experience for your audience

Getting the most out of your investment

Let’s be honest: content marketing is an investment of time and money, so you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of it. It’s a highly valuable resource in gaining traction, so it’s important that everyone is on the same page - particularly when it comes to:

  • Why you’re using content marketing to drive areas of your business or branding

  • What goals you’re trying to achieve

  • Who you’re targeting (remember there could be more than one group)

  • How you’ll use various platforms for your content marketing activities

So how does accountability come into it?

Accountability is the key driver for action - and action is what gives you consistency with your content marketing activities. And consistency is what gives you content marketing success.

Accountability looks like:

  1. Meeting regularly with the person or people looking after your marketing (every month or quarterly)

  2. Bringing ideas and information that can add value to the marketing direction

  3. Providing images, video, links, information that can help the person / people to create the most valuable content

  4. Keeping everyone informed about what is happening in your business - now and into the foreseeable future

  5. Reviewing and taking action on items as quickly as possible to keep the content marketing initiatives moving

Key takeaway

Content marketing can have an immense impact on your business when harnessed creatively and consistently. It has the greatest chance of success when there is valuable information provided along with regular communication. Remember: you get out of it what you put into it.
